As I am sure you cannot fail to have noticed, this (2013) is the centenary year of the Swansea Poet Dylan Thomas.
A few years ago I was involved in the making of a film by the the Norwegian documentary maker Jan Christian Molestad. The documentary retraced the steps of his father who in the early sixties had worked his fare to England by peeling potatoes on a merchant ship in order to visit the places written about by Dylan Thomas, having been inspired by hearing his recordings on the BBC.
As a teenager I was privileged to receive English and Latin tuition by our family friend Gwen Watkins, wife of the poet Vernon Watkins. Vernon was a close Swansea friend of Dylans, part of the so called Cardomah gang, and they corresponded and consulted about each others work. Gwen Watkins is one of the few remaining close friends who can describe Dylan from first hand experience. In this short extract from our documentary Gwen talks about her experience of Dylan.
